Learning To Live With Pain

“She writes from her wealth of personal experience and with extraordinary courage.”

Joan Sutherland OM, AC, DBE

“Mother Killed! Baby Lives in Freak Accident! Oxford Times 20 February 1962.

“The newspaper was wrong. I was that young woman”, writes Renée Goossens, an extraordinary woman who has suffered both physical and emotional pain throughout her life.

This book will change how you understand and cope with pain. It took Renée five and a half years of research and forty-five years of living it. Renée shares not only her own coping strategies, but those of over one hundred families she has interviewed in England, France and Australia. Pain Management also includes the advice of medical practitioners and complementary therapists.

“There is no family anywhere in the world who has not experienced pain, be it physical, emotional or in the form of grieving for a loved one,” writes Renée.

A Memoir

“In this book… sadness and joy dance a pas de deux that brings tears to the eyes and solace to the soul. It shows how indomitable the human spirit can be”.

Fred Blanks
Sydney Morning Herald

Belonging is the extremely moving autobiography by Renée Goossens. It’s a gripping story of a child who later, as a young woman struggled to find a life and identity of her own.

The father she adored, who instilled her with a great love of music, became a legendary figure in Australia’s cultural life. Sir Eugene Goossens was the Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Director of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. His influence led to the construction of one of Australia’s most treasured icons – the Sydney Opera House.

At 21, a serious motor vehicle accident kept Renée in hospital in Oxford for nearly two years, depriving her of her husband and baby. Sir Eugene Goossens died when she was in hospital and she only heard the devastating news through radio earphones whilst in  intensive care. When Renée was finally able to leave hospital, her life changed forever but she managed to fulfill her dream of learning to walk again and bringing her son to Sydney.

I read your article in The You magazine in Dec. I was inspired by your article and by the top ten tips for pain control and think most should be the way we live life in general, with or without pain. I bought your book Pain Management for my sister-in-law who is in constant pain with back problems but does NOT manage it well! I have read it myself and feel it is written from experience of an amazing life and full of common sense. I only hope she reads it and embraces many of your suggestions.

I believe (at 58) that we choose to live a life of joy or misery. I chose joy. On 25th Nov I was told I had developed breast cancer after a routine mammogram. As you can imagine I was a bit shocked and my head was all over the place at times. I’m not a’ why me’ person so accepted it and dealt with it, with the support of a wonderful husband. After two biopsies and a MRI scan the doctors decided I’d have a lumpectomy, a joyous day as we were all thinking it was to be a mastectomy. I had the lumpectomy on 23rd Dec. Never I have I been surrounded by so much love of family and friends from here (Dundee,Scotland), Australia, America and Canada. It’s been overwhelming (gifts, cards, emails, texts, chats) but wonderful and, as you suggested …I have been VERY thankful with all that help and support. I’ve believed in living a positive life, as much as possible, to give, to live life to the full so when I read your tips (for pain control) it was great to see what I felt in words. I’ve glued your top ten tips into the journal I am keeping of my new journey. Two things I have learned from this experience are : patience in abundance and accepting help graciously (it’s so easy to give but so much harder to receive but I’m learning!!!)

I am not in pain but was when I left hospital on Christmas Eve so took the pain killers regularly and was able to enjoy Christmas with the family. They did EVERYTHING and it was so good! On 12th Jan I go back to hospital to see if further treatment is required, perhaps radiotherapy.

I went on to your website to see if I could order your memoir,’Belonging’. Can I buy it in the UK? If so where? You have had a remarkable life and overcome so many obstacles and challenges. At this time in my life I need to read and be inspired by people like you. Wishing you all the best in 2009. Best wishes Moira Jaffrey
